Fall Smoke School

The South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources will offer a Classroom Session on September 22 located at the Joe Foss Building’s Matthew Training Center at 523 East Capitol Avenue, Pierre, SD 57501, and Visible Emission Evaluation Certification (“Smoke School”) on September 22-23, at the Fort Pierre Expo Center located at 320 Casey Tibbs Street, Ft Pierre, SD. We are attempting to hold the Classroom Session and associated subsequent Smoke School Certification Run #1 only for those individuals who have never attended the Classroom Session before. Therefore, if you have attended the Classroom Session in the past, please be courteous and sign up for any alternative option. If attending the Classroom Session, please bring your own pen. Topics covered in the Classroom Session will include: the history behind visible emissions evaluation (VEE), the primary components of the smoke generator, what goes on during field certification, and how to adequately document your VEE.

Only a limited number of attendees will be allowed to register per session. This requires advanced online registration available below. Please only sign up for one session. You may sign others up as long as a separate registration is filled out for each person. After registering you will receive a confirmation email, however if you don’t get one please look in your spam/ junk folder. Please keep the email, as it will have a link to edit your registration if you later decide to attend a different session or cancel. Additionally, if an individual were to fail the visible emissions exam on his or her first trial, that individual may be able to attend the following session(s). Again, in an effort to even out the crowd, the first certification run on the morning of the 22nd will only be for those attending the Classroom Session.

Smoke School certification must be repeated every 6 months. Each registrant needs to only pass a single run to become certified. This training class will be offered free of charge. Please see the enclosed agenda and directions for complete details. Again, if you plan to attend Smoke School this fall, please complete the online registration as soon as possible to get your preferred time. Pre-registered attendees will be notified by email of any location changes or cancellations. On-site registration will not be available. Finally, please do not attend any session if you are not feeling well. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call me at 605-773-3151.
