Feedlot Permit Program
IN SOUTH DAKOTA

Inspections

The Feedlot Permit Program inspects permitted Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) as well as potential CAFOs. DANR is required by state rules to inspect CAFOs with a set frequency. These inspections can be classified into three categories:

  • Construction Inspections - DANR will inspect each new operation applying for coverage under the general permit at least once during construction. The construction inspections consist of inspecting construction of operations making modifications to their manure management system. DANR verifies compliance with approved plans and applicable standards.
  • Operation and Maintenance Inspections - DANR will inspect larger operations at least once per year, other operations at least once every three years, and new operations at least once during the first 18 months of operation. The Operation and Maintenance inspections consist of verifying operations are in compliance with their permit coverage including record keeping requirements, facility maintenance, and nutrient management requirements.
  • Complaint Inspections - DANR will respond to complaints made in accordance with the South Dakota Complaint Law.
