DENR's First Completed
Brownfields Assessment Project

The Sunrise Addition in Redfield is the first brownfields assessment project completed by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. The city of Redfield and the state's Brownfields Assessment Program investigated 2.5 acres of potentially contaminated property in the heart of Redfield. The property was the former location of a small salvage/scrap yard which posed an eyesore in the community. Grow Spink, Redfield's economic development agency, along with other city agencies, worked with the owner of the salvage yard to successfully orchestrate a land swap. In addition, city resources were used to clear the property of debris. Grow Spink then worked with DENR to have an environmental assessment performed on the site. The data collected was used to provide assurances to lending institutions and prospective property owners that the property was safe to be used for housing development. This property has been developed into eight single family home sites providing a new residential area for the community. Four of these have homes on site or under construction.
